What is the current issue?

To promote growth in the agricultural and gardening field, chemical NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) fertilizers have been extensively usedin farming and gardening. However, the long-term use of chemical NPKfertilizer in farming and gardening can have negative impacts on the crop, soil and the environment, as well as the farmers and consumers.

Long-term use of NPK fertilizers would result in the following:

• Adversely affects soil acidity;
• Adversely affects plant growth and crop production;
• Causes long-term imbalances in soil pH and fertility;
• Causes accumulation of nitrates in soil and water;
• Causes destruction of ecosystem; and
• Causes health problem due to the presence of nitrate in drinking water.
